The symptoms of a parasitic infection can be difficult to distinguish from other ailments especially those from the gastrointestinal tract as they may be similar to many other different underlying causes. When investigating a suspected parasitic infection it is both important that thorough information is provided by the affected person accounting for all possible exposure occasions as well as a thorough account of the symptoms but also that the choice of analytic method maintains a high quality to ensure a reliable test result. 

Analytical methods for the identification of parasitic infections can vary from generalized methods such as microscopic examination where biological material is analysed directly in a microscope (eg: blood samples, stool samples and skin samples) but also more specific analytical methods that use identification of a species specific parasitic protein such as genetic material (DNA). In these species-specific parasitic analyses the prerequisite for a reliable test result is that the analysis has a high so-called sensitivity (reacts to extremely small amounts of parasitic DNA) and a high specificity – i.e. that the test method does not cross-react with other parasitic infections to give a so-called false positive test result.
