Dipylidium Caninum (Dog and cat tapeworm or Flea tapeworm) belongs to the tapeworm species that can cause intestinal infection in humans. The tapeworm is found all over the world and is transmitted from cats and dogs to humans by swallowing an infected flea in connection with, for example, poor hand hygiene before eating food or contaminated food. Therefore, remember to always wash your hands before eating, especially while abroad when you have petted a dog or cat where many animals roam free and are not dewormed regularly.
Symptoms that can occur with infection can be abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and anal itching.
